Matthew Iovane | The Best Way To Learn Guitar

Image
Matthew Iovane - One of the most asked and yet trickiest questions to answer for many beginner guitar players when they are first starting out is: what is the acceptable standard, or "best way" to learn how to play guitar? Of course the answer is there is no one single right way to learn how to play guitar and it all depends on the guitarist. Matthew Iovane - There are those that learn easily from books and can figure the rest out for themselves such as proper finger placement, technique, and of course, final sound, while others may choose a live instructor, a DVD series, or online guitar lessons from one of the great guitar learning systems that are available. Lastly there are people who will be entirely self-taught and who with time and practice will develop their skill sets. In actuality there is no one way of learning that will make you a better guitar player than another. Most of the best guitarist have in fact studied under seve...

Matthew iovane - What is Guitar Tab?

Image
Matthew iovane  — One of the things that makes learning the guitar so simple is the ease in which music can be written down and understood by a complete novice with no other musical experience. This form of musical notation is known as Guitar Tab. Guitar Tab is short for guitar tablature. You will find hundreds if not thousands of resources online containing any tabs you could possibly wish to find. Music stores are packed with tab books containing songs from your favourite bands or artists right through to instructional books teaching you how to take your guitar playing to the next level. Matthew iovane  — Understanding how to read guitar tablature is extremely simple. The only difficult part about it is training your fingers to play what you read! This can be one of the hardest aspects for a new guitarist to get their head around as fingers are not used to moving in this odd way. Keep persisting with it and soon your fingers will be doing what they are told! Guita...

Matthew Iovane | How to Play the Guitar: Get Started Playing the Guitar Today

Image
Matthew Iovane "When I started to play the guitar, I did things the hard way, trying to play chords and play songs. It was frustrating because my fingers just couldn't find the right position to make the guitar sound good. Since then, I've learned how to get started playing the guitar that's much faster and much easier and I'm going to show you how you can play the guitar right away. I love playing the guitar! I'm self-taught until a few years ago when I started working a music teacher. I bought my first guitar in 1989. But it's only been in the past five years that I've really focused on playing the guitar well. And now, I'm pretty good. I can jam with good musicians and I can sit down and entertain myself for hours with my guitar. Today, I'd rather play guitar than watch TV. Here's why: after watching TV, I'm relaxed and I've wasted an hour. After playing guitar, I'm relaxed and I'm an improved guitar player. A D...

Matthew Iovane | What is in the Singer Job Description?

Image
Matthew Iovane | What is in the Singer Job Description? An individual applying to become a singer is eying a career using his/her own voice and talent to entertain. The major job description of singers in their resume is to sing songs that will definitely amuse or entertain audiences. He/she must also provide the needed voice as a background if there is a lead singer. In case of choirs, he/she must be one in singing with the others. Every qualified singer has a voice that harmonizes with an ideal pitch that the singers will make. A few singers' voice varies but most can do a particular sound like a tenor, soprano, contralto, baritone, or base. As a singer, he/she must be capable of interpreting music through their knowledge of producing voice, rhythm, harmony, and melody. Singers can perform in an array of manners. Few perform being part of a choir or a choral group. Some performs in front of huge audiences like in concerts. While several singers put effort, just to perform ...

Matthew iovane | Picasso's 'The Old Guitarist'

Image
Created in 1903, after the death of Casagemas, Pablo Picasso's 'The Old Guitarist' is one of the best representations of the 'Blue' period for Picasso. Pablo Picasso was one the founding fathers of cubism, and definitely wore his heart on his sleeve. After the suicide and subsequent death of his closest friend, Casagemas, in a Parisian café where they had spent so much time, Pablo Picasso shifted his palette of rainbow-colors to a more depressed hue. 'The Old Guitarist' was painted in a series of solemn colorful efforts, all circled around musical instruments and the color, blue. Named appropriately as the blue period, this was the point in Pablo Picasso's life, where he demonstrated how much pain and beauty is wrapped up in artistic work. The tortured artist came out during this period and was in no way shape or form ashamed of that emotion. "Pain and death are integral parts of life", Pablo Picasso would be heard saying, so many times,...

Matthew iovane | The Greatest Rock Guitarist - Who is He?

Image
It seems that rock guitar players have always been a crowd pleaser, even going back to the days of Les Paul. He may not qualify as a rock guitarist in the sense that we understand it today, but Les Paul certainly made people sit up and take notice whenever he played. Of course, Les was in at the very beginning of the solid body electric guitar's entry onto the stage, so at that time there were very few guitarists who were even interested enough to get the technique to become a great rock guitarist. The foundation of the concept of the rock guitarist lay in the consolidation of the small group with drums, bass, lead and rhythm guitars, plus, maybe a keyboard. Groups like The Shadows, The Ventures and Dick Dale's Dell Tones made young men go out and buy guitars and sit in their rooms for hours practicing. When The Beatles became the first small group to gain international attention from people of all ages, the guitar reached the height of its popularity. The era of the g...

Matthew iovane | New Classic Rock Guitarist - Who's Hot and Who's Not?

Image
With a dime a dozen of guitarists out there today, picking out who's hot and who's not can be a bitter-sweet challenge. One way to overcome this challenge is to use, what I call, the Guitar Hero Effect Test. Basically... what you do is... compare the elements of the new rock guitarist to those of the legendary guitarists... and then... note where there is a similarity... something that matches... a common ground... The best way to do this is to create and follow a simple method... for instance... you can... 1) Determine who the new rock guitarist's biggest influences are 2) Find what they share in common with legendary guitarists 3) Then create a list that states the following... Like... name of legendary guitarist(s)... name of new rock guitarist... list what they have in common The best way to illustrate this is using an example. Let's take the new classic rock guitarist LYONS is r.s.p. - rock sensory perception... You read up on Lyons is r.s.p. and ...

The Best Guitarists of All Time | Matthew Iovane

Image
Coming up with a list of the best guitarists of all time can be a challenging task, as it is often quite subjective and taking into consideration that there are many genres to choose from such as blues, jazz, rock, funk and classical. Speaking of classical, the first guitarist that comes to my mind is Andre Segovia. He was known as the "Master of Classical Guitar". Moving from the classical realm to gypsy jazz and flamenco, Paco De Lucia and Django Reinhardt come to mind. I realize that I am jumping around quite a bit (listing the best guitarists is a bit of a stream of consciousness exercise) and I want to cover as many of my favorites here as possible. I was heavily influenced by the jazz fusion guitarists of the seventies and eighties by artists such as Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin, Steve Morse, John Scofeild, Eric Johnson, Jeff Beck, Alan Holds worth and Scott Henderson. In the straight-ahead jazz world, a few of my favorites are Wes Montgomery, Les Paul, Pat ...

What Makes a Good Guitarist | Matthew Iovane

Image
Many people want to be good guitarists. To be clear, when I say "good guitarist" I mean guitar-hero-good, not local-bar-playing-good. However, there are few people out there who actually achieve this level of ability. Certainly, I have not. However, I would still like to comment on what I think makes a good guitarist. It is not the focus of this essay to comment on lightning fast fingers or a solid rhythmic ability. I do not believe that a good guitarist needs to have perfect pitch or supersonic sight reading abilities. My goal is to identify qualities of great guitar players that transcend any stylistic considerations. There are great guitarists in every genre of music and my goal is to identify what they all have in common. The first and probably most important quality of a good guitarist is desire. Whether you are a finger-pickin' country hillbilly or a death metal shredder, you have to want to be a guitarist. A lot of people wish they were guitarists - lik...
